And those observations don't begin with a formal temperament test. They begin at birth.We notice which puppies are determined to find their favorite spot at the milk bar. Which ones settle quickly when handled. Which seem especially content tucked against us. Which are persistent problem-solvers when something gets between them and where they want to go.As their world grows, so do our opportunities to observe them. Through Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS), Early Scent Introduction (ESI), daily handling, new surfaces, household noises, outdoor exploration, interactions with people and our adult dogs, early training, play, problem-solving, and age-appropriate exposure to birds and natural scents, we get to see puppies respond to their world again and again.None of those individual moments defines a puppy. It's tempting to think: There's the calm one—and there's the wild one.Except the "calm" puppy may have spent the previous hour terrorizing everyone in the puppy pen and finally crashed five minutes before you arrived. The puppy currently playing tug-o-war with shoelaces may have just woken up from a two-hour nap.A single interaction is a snapshot. A breeder raising those puppies every day gets to see the entire movie.We see them when they're tired and when they're rested. When they're comfortable and when something is unfamiliar. When they're playing with their littermates and when they're separated from them. When they succeed immediately and when they have to work through a little frustration. That's where meaningful observations begin. We're not looking for one behavior. We're looking for patterns.What Are We Actually Looking For? As puppies develop, certain tendencies begin appearing more consistently. One may encounter a challenge and immediately try another approach while another decides the easiest solution is to ask a human for help.Those differences aren't necessarily strengths or weaknesses. They're information.Confidence Doesn't Always Mean "First" One of the easiest traits to misunderstand in a young puppy is confidence. The first puppy to climb onto something new isn't automatically the most confident puppy in the litter. Sometimes confidence looks like charging ahead without hesitation. Sometimes it looks like pausing for a few seconds, processing something unfamiliar, and then choosing to investigate it.That ability to recover and move forward can tell us more than the initial reaction itself. A puppy can startle at a loud sound and still demonstrate wonderful resilience if they recover quickly and return to what they were doing. And the puppy who wants to spend the most time in someone's lap isn't automatically the best family companion.They're simply different puppies.A highly independent, persistent puppy with tremendous prey drive might be exactly what an experienced hunting family hopes to find. That same puppy could be overwhelming for a first-time GSP owner wanting an active companion who can hike on Saturday and settle into family life the rest of the week.Meanwhile, another puppy with strong human focus, moderate drive, good recovery, and an eagerness to work with people may be an exceptional fit for that family.Neither puppy is better. The question is always: Better for whom?Nature Matters. So Does Nurture. Puppies don't arrive as blank slates. Genetics matter. Generations of breeding influence temperament, drive, natural ability, biddability, confidence, structure, energy, and countless other characteristics. That's one reason thoughtful breeding begins long before a litter is conceived.But genetics aren't the entire story. A puppy's early experiences matter. So do training, socialization, environment, expectations, consistency, opportunities, and, perhaps most importantly, the relationship that develops between a dog and its people.A breeder can identify tendencies in a young puppy. We cannot hand a family a finished adult dog in miniature.A promising hunting puppy still needs exposure and training to become a bird dog. A naturally biddable puppy still needs boundaries and consistency. A confident puppy still needs thoughtful socialization. And even the puppy showing a wonderful natural "off switch" still grows into an adolescent German Shorthaired Pointer.There are no shortcuts around raising the dog.Puppy Evaluations Aren't Fortune-Telling This is why we're careful about absolute predictions. We might tell a family, "This puppy consistently shows strong human focus." Or, "She's one of our more independent explorers." Or, "He has repeatedly shown strong scent interest and persistence."What we don't want to say is: "This puppy will definitely become a finished hunting dog." "This puppy will never be anxious." "This puppy will always be easy."No ethical breeder can promise exactly who a young puppy will become. Puppy evaluations are best understood as information—not guarantees.
